About.com Scuba's 10 Best Scuba Diving Masks

Favorite Scuba Diving Masks for All Face Shapes and Sizes

By

The following article lists ten excellent scuba diving masks according to the author. I haven't tried every single mask on the market, so it is likely that I am missing some very good masks. If you have a favorite mask that you do not see listed below, feel free to recommended it using the comment button at the bottom of the article.

It is important to try on a mask in order to determine whether it fits properly. While I have included links to online stores, most divers will find it worth the time and effort to purchase a mask from a physical dive shop -- not an online one. Dive shop employees will be able to help a shopper fit a mask, and usually offer warranties and other assistance.

Mask Style: Single window, low volume
Fit: Two sizes - Regular fits normal/large faces. Medium fits narrow faces.
Field of Vision: Good to excellent
Unique Features: UltraClear lenses - the mask glass is optical quality and has fewer impurities than standard mask glass, resulting in better light transmission with no green tint. The mask comes with a lifetime warranty against frame breakage, and retails online for about $100 USD.
Concerns: Mask glass may press on the bridge of large noses. Neither size is a good fit for adult divers with rounded faces and small features.

Mask Style: Two window, low volume
Fit: Classic mask that fits nearly everyone
Field of Vision: Fair to good
Unique Features: This is a very budget-friendly mask, retailing online for as little as $30 USD. The mask is available with prescription lenses and "gauge reader" bifocals. It is a tough and durable little mask.
Concerns: The mask won't fit divers at the extremes of the size range, especially those with very narrow faces. The external frame gives it a larger profile than some masks on this list.

Mask Style: Two window, super low volume
Fit: Excellent mask for small, hard-to fit faces. This mask will fit most divers.

Omer Zero Cubed Mask

Mask Style: Two window, extremely low volume
Fit: Excellent mask for small faces. May fit divers of all sizes, but definitely try this mask on before purchase.
Field of Vision: The best I have ever experienced.
Unique Features: The Omer Zero Cubed mask is my new mask! It is so low volume that it is advertised as not requiring equalization until 60 ft. The mask is small and light, with such a wide field of vision, that it is easy to forget you are wearing a mask. The mask retails online for about $80 USD.
Concerns: This is an unusual design and (again) divers should definitely try the mask on before purchase. It is likely to press on the forehead or nose of many divers. The styling is a little funky.
