Skill of the Week: Fin Pivot

Friday May 2, 2008
Fin Pivot

This week we're focusing on a skill that will help you find neutral buoyancy when you dive - the Fin Pivot.

One of the top reasons divers go through a lot of air is that their buoyancy isn't quite right which leads to them either kicking a lot to stay off the bottom or to prevent them from floating up. Divers struggling with buoyancy often inflate and deflate their BCDs too much which also wastes air. There is a simple method of finding the point at which you're neutrally buoyant and although it can seem a little difficult at first the fin pivot will come naturally with a little practice. Check out our How-to guide for the fin pivot and there's even an excellent demonstration video on YouTube to help you master it.
