MP3 Goes Deep

Monday March 3, 2008
iriver iFP-380TIt's been a busy time for underwater gadgets lately. In the last few weeks we've seen the UDI for underwater text messaging and the sQuba underwater car. Now you can not only go for a drive underwater while sending a text message but you can also listen to your favorite tunes at the same time. While waterproof MP3 players have been around for a while, the new iriver iFP-380T is impressive because it can actually be used while diving. Capable of going as deep as 200 feet (60 meters) the iFP-380T is a true diving MP3 player.

The iFP-380T is a sleek package powered by a combination of 9 volt and AA batteries and featuring two stereo headphones that can be clipped onto your mask strap. The only real drawback is that it has only 128MB of memory which can't be upgraded. This means you can only hold about 30 songs but that's probably enough to get you through at least one, if not two dives.

Currently retailing for only $99, it's a pretty good deal. So, if you can't live without your favorite music it's going to make diving all that much more enjoyable. I sort of like the sound of bubbles but must admit I'm looking forward to having a listen to Interpol's 'Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down' on my next dive.
