300 Year Old Pirate Ship Discovered in the Caribbean
Saturday December 15, 2007
In an exciting development for wreck diving enthusiasts, the remains of a ship believed to belong to the infamous British pirate Captain Kidd have been found off the coast of the Dominican Republic. William ‘Captain’ Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates of the late 16th century and the myth of his buried treasure inspired such literary tales as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
The 300 year old wreckage was found by a local diver in just 10 feet/3 meters of water off the coast of Catalina Island. The wreck has been untouched by looters and still features anchors and cannons. The site has been licensed to Indiana University and will be converted into an underwater preserve that will be accessible to divers and snorkelers. Read more about wreck diving and this discovery.
